1987

An outbreak of cold air from Northern Canada over the weekend sends temperatures plunging to record lows early this morning, and leaves a thick layer of frost on the pumpkins; in some exposed, rural areas, the record cold also brings the first killing freeze.

Sen. John Danforth, honored at a fund-raising reception on his behalf at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Oliver, says Supreme Court nominee Robert Bork is "a decent man" who doesn't deserve the kind of "lynching" he has received from the judiciary committee of the U.S. Senate.

1962

The Jackson R-2 Board of Education this week took options on two possible school sites and voted to call a school bond election on Nov. 20; the sites for the proposed junior high school are the John F. Hartle land in west Jackson and a tract just west of the Kroger egg-grading plant on Route D; that land is owned by J.C. Crites.

A price of $1,135,381.30 for the construction of Cape Girardeau's new junior high school has been agreed upon by the school board and the builder, the Harrison Brothers Construction Co.; the figure named is the result of nearly four months of negotiations.

JEFFERSON CITY -- A group of Southeast Missourians receive assurance that the state will purchase 80 acres surrounding Mississippi County's "big oak" providing the remainder of a 1,000-acre public reserve can be acquired privately.

Six swings and three see-saws, which formerly were used by pupils at the now abandoned Broadway School, are being moved to the grounds of Lorimier School; a slide which was also on the playground at Broadway is being repaired.

The Republican campaign in Cape Girardeau County was auspiciously opened at Common Pleas Courthouse last night by W.G. Archer, a representative business man of Evansville, Ind., who declared he considers it his duty to get out and urge the people to continue the prosperous conditions the country has enjoyed the past four years.

Clarence Gramling leaves for Walnut Ridge and Paragould, Ark., to spend a few weeks with his mother.
