Failure to comply with rules developed by federal agency to govern local school district employee regulations has prompted confrontation which, if lost, could cost Cape Girardeau School District $473,000 in federal aid; Supt. Arthur H. Turner outlines at new conference Board of Education endorsed position taken last night which challenges Department of Health, Education and Welfare regulations; prompting confrontation is complaint alleging sex discrimination in regard to maternity leave provisions.

Sen. Robert Dole will bring Ford-Dole presidential campaign on Southeast Missouri swing Monday, when he makes brief appearance at Cape Girardeau.

50 years ago: Oct. 12, 1951

Fountain Street between post office and Idan-Ha Hotel will become two-way street Monday; street has been reserved for one-way traffic since passage of ordinance Feb. 1, 1937; City County repeals this ordinance in morning, returning street to two-way use as recommended by City Traffic Advisory Committee.

Benton - Thirty acres of rice is being grown on Frank A. Bridge farm near Lusk Chapel, with harvest drawing near; rice is about ready to combine, and Bridge is favorably impressed with rice, expecting fair yield from adventure; he hopes to increase rice acreage next year.

75 years ago: Oct. 12, 1926

About 70 percent of voters of Cape Girardeau will be eligible to cast ballots at November election as result of three-day registration period which ended last night; total of 5,704 people registered at polls and will be able to vote.

Fiftieth anniversary of Southeast Missouri Medical Association opens with session at Common Pleas Courthouse in morning, principals on program being Dr. W.R. Goodkoontz of Desloge and Dr. L.D. Denton of Braggadocio; meeting will continue through Wednesday.
