CAIRO, Ill. -- Cairo public schoolteachers and the Cairo School District Board of Education reach a tentative contract agreement, ending a one-day strike by the Cairo Association of Teachers and allowing the resumption of regular classes.

Centerre Bank official Rock Finch, Mayor Howard C. Tooke, and Paul L. Ebaugh, chairman of the bank's board of directors, participate in a ribbon-cutting ceremony in the morning; the ceremony marks the official opening of the bank's new facility at the corner of Mount Auburn Road and Independence Street.

50 years ago: Oct. 11, 1958

Hazel Palmer, the first woman ever nominated by a major political party for the office of senator in Missouri, will be present at a 10th Congressional District Republican rally in Jackson on Oct. 15.

Plans for development of a business lot on West Broadway, between Doggett Park and Suedekum Electronic Supply, are being considered by owner Martin Oberle of Ste. Genevieve, but details haven't been completed.

Members of the Southeast Missouri Medical Society, ending their annual meeting in Cape Girardeau, elect Dr. C.E. Fallett of De Soto, Mo., as president, succeeding Dr. W.S. Love of Charleston, Mo.; Dr. J.H. Cochran of Cape Girardeau is chosen vice president.

Otis B. Knapp and N. Marchino have been placed in charge of the Cape Girardeau Prohibition law enforcement office, succeeding O.H. Cornelius and E.R. Brown, who until recently were on the St. Louis district staff of Prohibition investigators; both are now out of the service.

100 years ago: Oct. 11, 1908

The Rev. J.W. Bevelle, a state evangelist in the Christian Church, presides at services at the Christian Church in Cape Girardeau, the pulpit of which he is a prospective candidate for; Bevelle's home is at Lexington, Ky.

The Rev. and Mrs. Adolph Kistler returned to Cape Girardeau yesterday from St. Louis; they have just completed a six-month tour of this country and Europe; the Rev. Kistler holds his usual services at the Presbyterian church today.
