ATLANTA -- Rookie center fielder Willie McGee made the major offensive contribution last night, belting a two-run triple and a solo home run as the St. Louis Cardinals nailed down their 13th National League pennant with a 6-2 victory that completed a three-game sweep of the Atlanta Braves in the NL Championship Series; St. Louis will meet Milwaukee in the World Series.

50 years ago: Oct. 11, 1957

The biennial one-day convention of the Southeast Missouri Teachers Association will be conducted next Friday on the State College campus; Eleanor Roosevelt, wife of the late president, will make the principal address at the convention.

Behind the combination of Wayne Boswell and Don McBride, the Central High School Tigers grabbed an early lead and manage to hold on to it in order to defeat the Jackson High School Indians, 14-13, last night at Houck Stadium.

75 years ago: Oct. 11, 1932

Denver M. Wright, St. Louis manufacturer, is back in Cape Girardeau to make the last preparations for his lion hunt which, despite objections, he says he will stage somewhere in Southeast Missouri; Wright and his companion, O.N. Brinkmeyer, leave before noon, going south, with their destination a secret.

Excavation for the basement of a dwelling for E.F. Mehrle, which will face the north drive in Fairgrounds Park and be just west of Missouri Avenue, has begun; the house will be a one-story brick affair.

100 years ago: Oct. 11, 1907

For the first time since March 1905, wheat reaches the $1 mark in Cape Girardeau, the firm of Stein & Lance paying this amount for a large quantity received; the high price is said to be the result of a shortage of wheat in France, Russia and Germany.

The Huntress, a boat allotted by the government to the Naval Reserves of Missouri, passed Cape Girardeau yesterday on its way to St. Louis; the boat has been long delayed by repairs to its boilers.
