25 years ago: Jan. 9, 1982

The new pediatric intensive care unit at Southeast Missouri Hospital will be unveiled tomorrow during dedication and open house ceremonies; the unit includes four beds and an isolation room.

Restaurant and lounge space in the old Idan-Ha Hotel building at Broadway and Fountain, formerly occupied by Figaro's, has been leased by Ed Radetic Jr., who plans to open a seafood restaurant there; the lounge in the basement area will also be reopened.

50 years ago: Jan. 9, 1957

Gerhardt Construction Co., on a low bid of $143,108, has been awarded the contract for construction of a new municipal swimming pool in Capaha Park; preliminary work is expected to begin immediately with excavation to follow upon arrival of reinforcing steel.

A heavy fog shrouds Cape Girardeau and the surrounding area, stopping flights of Ozark Air Lines from the Cape Girardeau Municipal Airport.

75 years ago: Jan. 9, 1932

Dr. N.F. Chostner is offering a reward of $25 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of burglars who entered a house he owns at 1317 Whitener St. in Cape Girardeau and carried off a 125-pound wash basin; the thieves also took enough pipe from the basement to install the fixture.

Engineers of the Public Service Commission and the Missouri State Board of Health are in Cape Girardeau making an examination and tests of the Missouri Utilities Co. new water plant at Cape Rock.

100 years ago: Jan. 9, 1907

Month after month, the firemen of Cape Girardeau have requested the purchase of rubber boots and coats, without results; Monday, the men again asked the city council for the necessary accoutrements, giving the city fathers a deadline of Jan. 10 to agree to their request; if they are rebuffed again, the firemen say they will resign their positions.

W.J. Ewell and C.K. Dow, the hatters who have been in Cape Girardeau the past week cleaning and re-blocking hats, expect to finish up their business here by the last of the week and leave for the north.
