The county court releases the names of those on a committee to study a proposed recreational lake in the county: Charles Haubold, Dennis Sievers, Cape Girardeau Mayor Gene Rhodes, Jackson Mayor Carlton Meyer, Robert Hahn, Irvin H. Garms, Ralph Fehr, Fred R. "Rocky" Wilferth, David W. Heuer, Bill J. Baker and Tom Boudnoit.

Carolyn Kelly and Thomas Harte have filed for another term on the Cape Girardeau School Board; two seats are up for election April 7.

50 years ago: Jan. 8, 1962

Fire in the morning destroys a large barn and its contents, including livestock and machinery, on the Leroy Chambers farm a mile northeast of Allenville; destroyed are about 40 young pigs, four sows, a stake body truck, 4,000 bales of clover hay, a wagon trailer, 300 bushels of soybeans and small farm equipment; cattle are driven from the barn by Chambers after he discovers the fire.

The Cape Girardeau City Council approves the purchase of a new police car to replace one not now in running condition; the city will pay Ford Groves $1,641.33, along with the old car, for a 1962 Ford.

75 years ago: Jan. 8, 1937

The men who have been promoting the new community center and fairgrounds are losing no time in working out details; the options for the land are being checked, and surveyors will soon be busy; more efforts will be made to buy the Hervey Little tract of 3.24 acres, the two small parcels that make less than an acre, and the Sinclair filling station.

J.F. Cox Jr. of Cape Girardeau purchases the Womack Pharmacy in the Marquette Hotel building from Floyd Womack and his father, H.B. Womack, who operates a drugstore at Oran, Mo.

100 years ago: Jan. 8, 1912

The blizzard that struck Cape Girardeau on Saturday night was the worst in many years, the temperature sinking to 15 degrees below zero and remaining at about that stage all day yesterday; the ice on the river has grown dense and now blocks the stream.

The scheduled performance of Guiseppe Campanari tomorrow at the Normal School has been canceled; the opera singer's schedule in New York prevents him from filling his engagement here.
