Several days of reprieve from weekend's dose of snow and bloom - if not immediately from cold - are forecast for Cape Girardeau today and tomorrow; while sun appeared in clearing skies Sunday, temperature continued to drop, reaching wintry season low of zero degrees at airport.

Ice gorges developed in Mississippi River south of Cape Girardeau over weekend, trapping nine towboats and about 46 barges in Dogtooth Bend area; one of trapped barges, laden with cement, broke loose from tow and sank in ice-clogged water.

50 years ago: Jan. 8, 1954

Cape Girardeau boxers won six fights and lost four as they made their Golden Gloves debut at Arena Building last night.

Those hauling water from Jackson municipal plant to stricken areas are far behind schedule, so numerous are calls; many farm homes are without water.

75 years ago: Jan. 8, 1929

Parking of vehicles in business districts of Cape Girardeau between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. is prohibited under terms of ordinance adopted by city council.

City council has given permission to fair association to hold annual event at Fairground Park in September; it may be last time fair will be held in park, as city expects to develop site.
