1988

A developing winter storm moving across the southern Gulf Coast states is expected to dump at least 8 inches of snow in the Cape Girardeau area tonight and tomorrow; Cape Girardeau is ready for the snow, with five snow plows mounted on city dump trucks and other trucks equipped with sanders.

Southeast Missouri Democrats are generally enthusiastic about the entry of Betty Hearnes into the 1988 gubernatorial race; they are cautiously optimistic about her chances of ousting Republican Gov. John Ashcroft.

1963

Newly elected officers of St. Andrew Lutheran Church congregation are installed during the morning worship service; they are: president, Chester Wallis; vice president, Hugo Dippold; secretary, Walter Hesskamp; and treasurer, Earl Kirchhoff.

Observance of the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation is held in the afternoon at New Bethel Baptist Church; guest speaker is the Rev. David F. Harris, pastor of St. James A.M.E. Church; choirs from several churches perform.

1938

Plans for remodeling and enlarging three buildings on Main and Independence streets are made public; the buildings, one occupied by the F.W. Woolworth Co., another by the Mehrle Grocery and the third a vacant structure just west of the grocery, are owned by Mary Houck; the work will include combining the present space occupied by the Woolworth firm with that of the grocery; a second floor will be built over the grocery store building to be used by Woolworth as a stockroom.

Pupils of St. Mary's Grade School are comfortably established in the new addition to the school, which was completed recently.

1913

The contract drawn up by the Cape Girardeau Commercial Club committee and Arthur Losey, representing the Losey Marine Motor Co., of Indianapolis, Ind., has been signed and duly executed by both parties; within 60 days, the company will be organized under the laws of Missouri with a capital of $50,000; it will manufacture marine engines in this city.

A ministerial alliance is formed in Cape Girardeau, with the Rev. J.H. Knehans of the German Methodist Church elected president.
