Complete computerization of Kent Library and acquisition of computer equipment in two other areas top a list of projects approved by the Southeast Missouri State University Foundation Board of Directors; the three projects, which total $179,000, are among a dozen projects included in a $250,000-funding package adopted by the board.

The Central High School marching band is back in its "Tiger's Den" following a holiday trip to Phoenix and a performance in the Fiesta Bowl Parade.

50 years ago: Jan. 4, 1961

The Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors yesterday voted to devote 25 percent, or $5,000, of the chamber's 1961 budget to industrial development; the move was a result of recent inquiries into what chamber members think should be the organization's main project this year.

Prosecuting Attorney Stephen E. Strom announces the appointment of William H. Frye as assistant prosecuting attorney; Frye served in a similar capacity during the second term of Stephen N. Limbaugh as prosecuting attorney.

75 years ago: Jan. 4, 1936

After holding the Mississippi River at Cape Girardeau in an icy grip for four days, the ice gorge that completely blockaded the stream here finally released its hold late yesterday.

A.J. Jarosik of Cape Girardeau has purchased a shoe repair shop at New Madrid, Mo., from Henry Buchert and has taken charge of the business; Jarosik formerly operated a shoe repair shop in the 900 block of Broadway and more recently was proprietor of a shop in the 100 block of Broadway; Jarosik plans to move his family to New Madrid soon.

100 years ago: Jan. 4, 1911

George Frenzel, 77, a respected resident of Cape Girardeau, died yesterday in St. Louis, at the home of a daughter; for many years Frenzel was a blacksmith in Cape Girardeau; he was born in Germany in 1833 and came to America when he was 18.

In a general order signed by Louis Houck, president of the Chester, Perryville & Ste. Genevieve Railway and the Saline Valley Railroad, and Giboney Houck, president of the Cape Girardeau & Chester Railroad and the Cape Girardeau & Thebes Bridge Terminal Railway, A.R. Zoelsmann is appointed auditor of the systems.
