With the ground still saturated with melted snow and heavy rain from a week ago, Cape Girardeau County was hit with a second weekend of flash flooding; 23 county roads are closed by high water and at least two bridges are washed out.

MOUND CITY, Ill. -- Mound City's vision of becoming a busy shipping point for commerce on the Ohio River will receive a boost when a multimillion-dollar coal and grain-loading terminal begins operation in April; the terminal, owned by Behimer and Kissner Co. of Granite City, Ill., is in the final phase of construction.

50 years ago: Jan. 30, 1957

The situation in the ice belt in lower Southeast Missouri is far from normal, but some improvements have been made as electric power and telephone service are extended to most stricken towns; but the towns of Caruthersville, Senath, Cardwell, Arbyrd and Hornersville are still in the dark.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- A bill to give the state's universities and colleges a $5.5 million increase in the fiscal year beginning July 1 is ready for introduction in the Missouri House; Southeast's share of the appropriation would be $1,318,871, up from $910,799.

75 years ago: Jan. 30, 1932

Police Capt. Charles Schweer says he has decided to withdraw from the race for city commissioner at the approaching municipal election, despite the fact that petitions for his candidacy have about 600 names.

A cold wave -- the first of the season -- rode out of the north overnight on the heels of a snowstorm, sending the mercury skidding down to 15 degrees; the intense cold brought suffering to transients.

100 years ago: Jan. 30, 1907

A report for the fifth month of the school year shows that the children are still interested in their studies; enrollment totals for the public schools in the city are: Lorimier, 445; Jefferson, 297; and Lincoln, 174.

A meeting was held of the alumni of St. Vincent's College, with a large number attending; an effort will be made to revive the school to its former glory, with the Rev. F.E. Feeley, president, leading the way.
