Southeast Missouri State University students will be paying more to live on campus next fiscal year; Board of Regents Wednesday hiked room and board rates for 1993 fiscal year; new rates will amount to 8 percent increase in fees for average student and put room and board charges in range of $3,000 a year.

Jackson - With filing dealing less than year away, none of four incumbent Jackson Board of Aldermen have opposition, so far, in their bids for reelection; Ward Four Alderman LeRoy Brown and Ward One Alderman David Ludwig were first to file for reelection on Jan. 7.

25 years ago: Jan. 30, 1977

Tenth anniversary of University Lutheran Chapel of Hope and Lutheran Campus Center is being celebrated by numerous special services and projects throughout year; at special anniversary service in morning, the Rev. Paul Spitz, pastor of St. Timothy Lutheran Church in St. Louis, is guest preacher at Chapel of Hope.

Missouri will provide $15,000 in federal funds to agencies in 49 counties - including Cape Girardeau County - for relief of excessive fuel bills incurred by poor in what weather experts are calling "unmerciful" winter; near-arctic temperatures are also blamed for death of Poplar Bluff man, who was discovered frozen to death outside his home yesterday.

50 years ago: Jan. 30, 1952

Basketball madness that gripped Southeast Missouri during state tournament last year is back again, this time reaches out to snare followers of John Burroughs time in St. Louis that has yet to meet defeat; that team will be here Saturday night to engage stalwart Puxico Indians in return game and with them will come special train load of fans, reportedly 400 in number.

Sikeston - Sikeston voters yesterday approved two bond issues totaling $1,050,000 in special election; funds will be used to expand sanitary sewer system east and west on Highway 60.

75 years ago: Jan. 30, 1927

Work continues on new First Baptist Church building on West Broadway; heating plant there has been put in operation to aid plaster work; art windows are being installed.

Two young automobile bandits defy authorities of four towns on Highway 60 and are captured only after engaging in running gun battle with officers; battle starts when boys, after stopping for gas and oil at Sikeston station, flee without paying bill; duo speed through Morehouse, Dexter and Poplar Bluff, before Deputy Sheriff Brown Jewell at Sikeston, stationing himself in middle of highway with his revolver raised, halts vehicle.
