Cape Girardeau city officials say tighter accounting controls have put Municipal Court finances back on solid footing; those controls were put in place in 1987, after state auditors discovered that at least $63,000 over a three-year period was missing from the court's bond account.

The terms of two Southeast Missouri State University regents expired Sunday, and at least one will be replaced because she has moved away; the terms of Anne R. Bradshaw of Cape Girardeau and H. Kay Schilly, formerly of Crystal City, Mo., have expired.

An unexpired layer of ice that glazes U.S. 61 causes a collision in the morning that takes the life of Daniel G. Miller, 44, of Cape Girardeau; the fatal crash is just one of several in the area that results in at least eight people being hurt.

Oscar C. Smude, 39 S. Sprigg St., filed his petition as a candidate for city commissioner with city clerk Verna L. Landis yesterday; Smude is employed part-time by Horton Sales Co., and is the fifth person to file for city commissioner.

Cape Girardeau Mayor Edward L. Drum has received a letter from the Public Works Administration saying it can't approve works projects here, including two sewer systems; recently, similar letters were received here turning down applications for grants to fund major street projects.

The Cape Girardeau City Council instructs city attorney B. Hugh Smith to advise the owner of a two-story frame house at 815 Merriwether St. that the structure is a fire hazard and to remove the house; owner of the building is F.F. Braun.

ROCKVIEW, Mo. -- J.P. Holmes of Rockview recently circulated a petition asking for the construction of a depot at the Rockview crossing and assigning an agent there; after obtaining a large number of signatures, the petition has been sent to the management of the railroads.

Margaret Hinchey, who had been spending the holidays at home, returns to St. Louis to resume her musical studies; she is soprano soloist at St. Michael's Episcopal Church there.
