1989

The congregation of St. Mark Lutheran Church celebrates the elimination of the debt on its church building and property during worship services; started as a mission congregation by the Lutheran Church in America, St. Mark purchased the property on Cape LaCroix Road in 1966.

Southeast Missouri State University football coach Bill Maskill has named Marty Mornhinweg as his new quarterback coach; Mornhinweg, 26, replaces Jon Gruden, who departed to accept an offensive assistant position at the University of Pacific.

1964

A West Coast manufacturer of electronic equipment has told Cape Girardeau officials he is prepared to sign an agreement to establish a plant here contingent upon the passage of the upcoming airport bond issue; the company is interested in purchasing about seven acres of airport property near the north end of the present runway.

Since the release of the federal government's report on the dangers of smoking cigarettes, pipes and cigars have made something of a comeback on the State College campus.

1939

Special services commemorating the centennial of the Saxon immigration to America are held in the morning at Trinity Lutheran Church; the services are conducted in both German and English.

The Rev. T. Ellis Young was ordained as a Baptist minister Thursday night at Red Star Baptist Church; he is a member of Red Star and has been doing some preaching in recent months, having decided more than a year ago to become a minister.

1914

The warm weather has folks talking about baseball; much of the agitation is laid at Chap Hunter's front door; Hunter, of New Madrid, Mo., is talking up the idea of forming a league to include the Missouri towns of New Madrid, Cape Girardeau, Chaffee, Sikeston, Poplar Bluff, Dexter, Kennett, Caruthersville and Portageville.

Attorneys representing Aquamsi Street property owners have filed a petition with the clerk of the Common Pleas Court asking for an injunction restraining the Frisco Railroad from carrying out the contemplated opening of Aquamsi Street between Morgan Oak and Good Hope streets.
