1988

The Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps unit at Southeast Missouri State University is among units on 37 college campuses that will close in spring 1989; all are being closed because of Air Force budget cuts.

Two high school teachers have filed for the Cape Girardeau Board of Education; Harold G. Haas, a retired science teacher at Cape Girardeau Central Junior High, is making his first bid for the board; John Eck, social studies instructor at Oak Ridge High School, is making his second run for a board seat.

1963

Construction of a small boat harbor at Trail of Tears State Park is expected to be started this year, although completion may be another year away; half the cost of the $400,000 marina will come from state funds and half from federal funds.

Jammed ice packs in the Mississippi River at either end of the Cape Girardeau riverfront have left a pool of open, sluggish water here; the ice gorge that formed near Cairo, Ill., several days ago has backed all the way to the Diversion Channel; at the same time, a new gorge has developed at Cape Rock to the north.

1938

Letters expressing disapproval by a great number of people and organizations in Southeast Missouri over the government's decision to discontinue the three CCC drainage camps operating in Southeast Missouri are being sent to Washington, D.C., in an effort to appeal to President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Appointment of a deputy U.S. marshal, to succeed Charles G. Macke, is expected to be made shortly by Marshal William B. Fahy; Macke resigned after being named acting postmaster of Jackson.

1913

It begins to look as though Main Street will be extended south from Independence Street to William Street; property owners south of Independence are signing agreements as to the terms on which they will transfer the 40-foot strip for the street to the city.

The Gordonville Roller Mill has received an engine and dynamo for the light plant, which the proprietors will install in the flour mill; the equipment will be installed right away, and the town will soon be glowing brilliantly with electric lights.
