CAIRO, Ill. -- The Coast Guard moves in a helicopter and other equipment to watch a huge ice gorge on the Mississippi River that is expected to break apart; the helicopter will make surveillance flights over the region; two 65-foot Coast Guard boats are standing by.

A mock missile attack on this country is being plotted at police headquarters as part of a nationwide civil defense warning system exercise; the exercise is being directed from the headquarters of the North American Air Defense Command near Denver.

75 years ago: Jan. 29, 1937

NEW MADRID, Mo. -- Girded along its 35-mile front by a sandbag and lumber top wall, the floodway levee is prepared to meet the crest of the mammoth Mississippi River flood; all along the length of the spillway, the water is from 4 to 6 feet from the dike's top; a force of 5,000 men is working to maintain the levee.

Cape Girardeau has 532 flood refugees registered for temporary housing, while others are here with relatives or friends; most of those here are from the Dorena, Mo., and East Prairie, Mo., communities in the floodway area and a few are from Cairo, Ill.

100 years ago: Jan. 29, 1912

The ladies of the fountain committee of the Women's Relief Corps have great success selling carnations in honor of President McKinley's birthday; they sell 1,000 carnations at 10 cents each and clear about $50; the ladies still owe a small amount on the fountain.

The Nancy Hunter Chapter, Daughters of American Revolution, holds its annual meeting at the home of Mrs. John S. Kochtitzky; Mrs. L.B. Houck is elected regent and Elma Ealy viceregent.
