25 years ago: Jan. 28, 1985

One of two federal prisoners who broke out of the Cape Girardeau jail about two weeks ago was apprehended yesterday in his hometown of Oklahoma City, Okla.; he was arrested at the home of a female friend.

The head of the Southeast Missouri State University education and psychology department during the 1950s and early 1960s, Dr. Robert R. Hill, died Saturday at Menlo Park, Calif., where he was visiting his son; he was 90 years old.

50 years ago: Jan. 28, 1960

Bahn Brothers Hardware Store, 10 N. Main St., is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year; Leon J. Bahn of the company was honored yesterday at a meeting of the Missouri Retail Hardware Association at the Chase Hotel in St. Louis; the store was founded in 1860 in a building that was north of the present store on Main by George W. Bahn, father of the present owner, and Bernard Bahn, his uncle.

The Mothers' March is staged in Cape Girardeau city and county, the door-to-door campaign collecting money for the March of Dimes.

75 years ago: Jan. 28, 1935

Two stores -- Esicar's Cash Meat Market at 411 Broadway and Midway Grocery near the Cape LaCroix Creek bridge on South Sprigg Street -- were burglarized over the weekend, thieves obtaining $17 in cash and a small quantity of merchandise; the thefts, according to police, were committed by hungry amateurs, judging from the big bites taken out of buns, cakes and meat loaves left lying on the floors of the businesses entered.

Judge Frank Kelly in Circuit Court sets Feb. 16 as the last date for taking up claims against the closed Sturdivant Bank.

100 years ago: Jan. 28, 1910

The Frisco Railroad recently met with Cape Girardeau's city fathers about improvements it will make to its holdings here; the company wants to raise its tracks on the levee so that high water won't affect them; it also wants to straighten the curve at Independence Street; in return for this privilege, the railroad agrees to rebuild the levee, to raise the river wall and repave the levee.

Paragould, Ark., Mayor J.R. Thompson is in Cape Girardeau to inspect the town's newly paved streets.
