Patrolman Charles H. Maack and O.E. "Barney" Zimmerman file petitions for nominations as city commissioners in the primary election March 22; their filings bring the number of candidates in the commissioner race to seven.

Clouds and heavy fog cover much of Missouri, including Cape Girardeau; according to T.W. Rushing at the Missouri Dry Dock, activity on the Mississippi River is almost at a standstill because of the poor visibility.

75 years ago: Jan. 27, 1935

Burdette G. Lewis of Princeton, N.J., foremost authority on the development of eleemosynary and penal institutions, speaks at the morning service of First Presbyterian Church; his topic is "The Rebuilding of Mankind."

The resignation of the Rev. Walter E. Koepf as pastor of First English Evangelical Lutheran Church is accepted at a congregational meeting; Koepf will leave Cape Girardeau on March 1 to take up the pastorate of a mission church at Macomb, Ill.

100 years ago: Jan. 27, 1910

L.J. Albert Jr. is helping Chris Von der Ahe put together a semiprofessional baseball team, which will be under the sponsorship of the Central Business Men's Association.

J. Henry Caruthers is now an attorney, having received his license and proper authority from the Supreme Court to practice in the courts of the state of Missouri; Caruthers will have his office in the Himmelberger-Harrison Building.
