1964

Sgt. 1st Class Arnold C. Bowers, a recent Cape Girardeau arrival and member of the "peacetime Army," was honored last night at the National Guard Armory with the presentation of the Silver Star for "gallantry in action while engaged in military operations"; he was one of only five men to earn the decoration for combat action in Vietnam.

Mrs. John Godwin, wife of the airport co-manager, was instrumental in the municipal airport being tabbed as a stopping place for this year's Powder Puff Derby, a national cross-country flying race for women July 4 through 8.

1939

Grace Methodist Episcopal Church's new three-story addition and reconstructed main church building are dedicated in the morning by Bishop Charles L. Mead of the Methodist Episcopal Church; the work was finished last week at a cost of $22,000.

On a recent hunting trip to the interior of Mexico in the Sierra Madre Mountains, Dr. Dennis B. Elrod of Cape Girardeau bagged three bucks, two wolves, two turkeys and a bushel of quail; in addition, he took approximately 10 rolls of moving picture film, almost half of that in color.

1914

Disdaining to give any information about the purpose of his trip, Oren Wilson leaves in the morning for Washington, D.C.; outside of the fact that he is going to call on his Uncle Woodie -- President Woodrow Wilson -- he refuses to reveal his real intentions.

CAIRO, Ill. -- The statute of June 26, 1913, giving the women the right to vote is upheld by County Judge W.S. Dewey in the Thebes, Ill., election contest case; Dewey finds that 192 legal votes were cast against saloons at the Thebes election in November and 139 legal votes for saloons; his ruling confirms that Thebes went "dry" with the help of the votes of women.
