Two more candidates have filed for Cape Girardeau County offices, bringing the total number of filings to nine; John Ferguson, pastor of the Third Street Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau, has filed as a Republican candidate for public administrator, while Democrat Harold G. Cobb of Cape Girardeau has filed for re-election as county coroner.

The Jackson R-2 School district has its third school board candidate after more than a month of no filings; filing for the board is Jack H. Knowlan Jr., an associate administrative law judge with the Division of Workers' Compensation in Cape Girardeau.

1963

Firemen battled flames for nearly six hours last night in an effort to extinguish a fire, which destroyed Baker's Auto Trim and Upholstery Shop at 2254 Kingsway Dr.; damage to the building and contends is estimated at between $10,000 and $15,000 by the owner, Ralph H. Baker of Jackson.

All federal and state agencies connected with the program have given approval to the Cape Girardeau sewage disposal project; bids for construction will be opened March 22 under a schedule proposed by the engineers.

1938

John Soutiea, district game conservation agent, said he may organize a mass hunt of bobcats if area sportsmen and farmers desire it; Soutiea said there are too many of these big cats in the district.

Based on an order made in Common Pleas Court, a fund of $16,874.49 remaining in the receivership of the Cape Girardeau Northern Railroad will be distributed to creditors at once; this amount remained after final fees to the receiver and to attorneys and other costs were paid.

1913

Schuchert and Harrison, new managers of the Opera House, have several carpenters and painters busy putting the finishing touches on the balcony; they expect to start a moving picture show there Saturday night.

The congregation of the Lutheran Church at Illmo is raising funds to be used for the construction of a new $15,000 church; the church has 10 acres of land in Illmo, from which lots are being sold and the money set aside for the building project.
