A dapper burglar who broke into the Pollack Hide and Fur Co., Independence Street and Highway 61, Friday night apparently was frightened off, leaving behind his new black derby hat; the break-in was discovered by Jacob Pollack, owner of the company, Saturday.

Three local women enlisted in the Navy WAVES in January: Carol Ann LeGrand of Cape Girardeau, Patricia Bohnert of Longtown, Mo., and Joyce Carlson of Cairo, Ill.

Paul R. Brooks, a former member of the city council, secures a petition at the office of city clerk W.C. Kaempfer and announces he will be a candidate for city commissioner in the coming municipal elections.

Cecil G. Morrison, executive of the Southeast Missouri Area Council of Boy Scouts since 1930, has resigned to accept a similar post with the Lake of the Ozarks Council, with headquarters in Jefferson City, Mo.

1913

County roads are in awful shape because of the continued rains; the Bend Road, which has been in good shape for years, is now nearly impassable in numerous places; likewise, numerous streets in Cape Girardeau are showing the effects of the wet weather; Broadway, between Henderson Avenue and the fairgrounds, is in fearful condition; Sprigg Street at William Street is so deep in mud, parishioners had a hard time getting to St. Mary's Catholic Church yesterday.

Lilly Powers, who has been acting as stenographer for Lane & Alexander, has left Cape Girardeau for Jefferson City, Mo., where she will be stenographer for Rep. C.C. Oliver.
