City council takes only 14 minutes to dispatch evening's business; however, council has sufficient time to approve contract with Cape Girardeau Area Industrial Recruitment Association for services to solicit business, industry and commerce to area.

Snow begins falling again in morning and forecasters are calling for about inch additional accumulation in Cape Girardeau, with as much as three inches to north; City Manager W.G. Lawley says that bit more snow on top of 16 inches already on ground won't amount to more than another drop in the bucket.
Cape Girardeau Board of Education President Jerry Ford announces he won't seek re-election to school bard, but will file for 156th District Representative's seat, now held by Gary W. Rust, R-Cape Girardeau; Ford is second Democrat to file for nomination, other being Jim Bequette.
50 years ago: Jan. 20, 1953
Dixie Contractors of Cape Girardeau is low bidder for moving estimated 72,000 cubic yards of earth at new high school site, but it will be several days before contract award is made by board of education; Dixie Contractors bid $18,749.50 for land-levelling job.
Zalma -- Proposed bond issue of $60,000 for Zalma Reorganized School District R-5 is defeated, failing to get bare majority where two-thirds majority is needed for passage; if issue had passed, district would have received $50,000 from state; County Superintendent Glenn A. Seabaugh says there are 700 pupils in district and expansion of school facilities is needed.
75 years ago: Jan. 20, 1928
Shot and wounded by man, who in turn was probably fatally shot, Police Captain W.C. Kelpe is in Cape Girardeau hospital with bullet wound in his right leg as result of gun battle between raiding party of officers and man in woods eight miles north of town.
Elmore Kassel announces he has purchased from his mother, Albertine Kassel, the Kassel jewelry store at 625 Broadway, and in future it will be under his management; established in 1904 by late F.H. Kassel, store has been in continuous operation, and since death of founder, it has been operated for Mrs. Kassel by her two sons, Elmore and Otto.
