WASHINGTON - William O. Douglas, who served 36 years as a Supreme Court justice, dies at age 81; Cape Girardeans recall that on Nov. 30, 1965, Douglas spoke at Southeast Missouri State University.

Lionel Hastings has become the sole stockholder in Bumpa-Tel Inc., a manufacturing firm at 775 S. Kingshighway; he purchased the stock held by his father, Warren Hastings, who has retired; the firm is the nation's largest manufacturer and distributor of supplies for high school driver education programs.

50 years ago: Jan. 19, 1955

On the fringe of the blizzard that brought snow from one to seven inches in depth in west and northwest Missouri, Cape Girardeau received only a trace of snow, but did get the predicted cold weather; temperatures sank to 27 degrees overnight and are expected to go lower today.

Edwin W. Sander announces his candidacy to succeed himself as county superintendent of schools, subject to the annual school election to be held April 5.

75 years ago: Jan. 19, 1930

Plans are being completed and a contract will be let soon for the construction of a two-story Sunday school annex and for remodeling of the main building of the Red Star Baptist Church.

The Rev. William Schroer, assistant pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, has been extended a call to become pastor of the Lutheran church at Rochester, Ind., an invitation he is considering.

100 years ago: Jan. 19, 1905

Mail between Cape Girardeau, Jackson and other points north to Oak Ridge will soon be carried on the Houck Railroad; chief clerk C.A. Charlton inspected the line yesterday and has assured the Cape Girardeau postmaster he will make immediate recommendations to the department at Washington for the change from coach service to that of railway.

Considerable talk is heard nowadays concerning the opening of a boulevard 100 feet wide around the city; Commercial Club members will discuss the matter this evening.
