State Rep. Marvin E. Proffer announces he has filed for re-election in the new 158th District, formerly the 155th; the district consists of all of rural Cape Girardeau County, Jackson and four precincts of south Cape Girardeau.

Cape Girardeau County Auditor H. Weldon Macke, who is finishing his third four-year term, files for re-election on the Republican ticket.

50 years ago: Jan. 18, 1957

Dr. Kurt von Schuschnigg, former chancellor of Austria and now professor of government at St. Louis University, will speak at both State College assemblies Wednesday; he will speak to the three upper classes in the morning and to the freshman class, as well to townspeople, in the afternoon.

The Joseph Szabo family arrive in Jackson after fleeing Soviet tyranny in Hungary; the family consists of Mr. and Mrs. Szabo and their children, Magda, 11, and Joseph, 9.

75 years ago: Jan. 18, 1932

The Cape Girardeau Rotary Club, during its regular luncheon meeting at the Hotel Marquette, votes to take over sponsorship of Troop 5 of Boy Scouts, which is comprised of youths residing in the Red Star suburb.

Picturing his ideal for the Cape Girardeau of the future, L.R. Johnson, owner of Johnson Flower Gardens and a community leader, lays before the city council a comprehensive plan for development of the city, particularly the western limits, into a recreational metropolis such as will attract hundreds annually.

100 years ago: Jan. 18, 1907

In tow of coaches Clyde Elder and Gertrude Becker, the boys and girls basketball teams of the Normal School leave early in the morning for Carbondale, Ill., to play the teams of the Normal School of that town this evening.

A group of out-of-town millers has asked the Cape Girardeau Commercial Club for assistance in locating to the former Union Mill on Water Street; however, the proposal includes the acquisition of a switch track from the south to run up Water Street to the old mill; the club has turned down the proposal, as there is no way the city fathers nor property owners will agree to a switch track in front of the warehouses on the wharf.
