1988

Peter Chan has opened the Chinese/American Restaurant at 1159 N. Kingshighway; the operation is managed by Chan's daughter, Karlina; the family moved to the United States from Hong Kong about three years ago.

Christian music singer Carman Licciardello entertained a crowd of over 2,700 at the Arena Building in Cape Girardeau last night; an estimated 500 people were turned away at the door.

1963

Gov. John M. Dalton has reduced the college's request from $5,982,440 in general funds to $4,972,633; the college asked for and will receive capital funds to construct an addition to the power plant, an addition to Kent Library, extensions of utilities to service new dormitories, a new classroom building and for general repairs.

Dixie Contractors is clearing property in preparation for construction in a few months of a building for First Federal Savings and Loan Association; the former Bremermann house at 315 Broadway, two homes on Themis Street and other structures will be razed.

1938

Judge C.A. Vandivort, representing the county court in projected negotiations looking to the purchase of the Cape Girardeau traffic bridge, has written F.J. Stranahan of Toledo, Ohio, asking for a date for a conference between the bridge owners and county officials.

J. Frank Masterson, the former county treasurer, has taken out a petition as a potential candidate for Cape Girardeau city commissioner; others circulating petitions for that position are Phil H. Steck, Frank Batchelor, Robert Reed and B.L. Patrick.

1913

For the first time in the memory of most people, the road between Cape Girardeau and Jackson is nearly impassable; of the numerous automobiles that are in service between the towns, only two are able to make the trip; in a number of places, the heavy rains have caused the earth to get so mellow that the gravel has been swallowed; in some places autos sink to their hubs.

H.P. Gaines tells the Republican he is in the race for city collector and expects to win; others mentioned for this post are Dr. Fristoe, George H. Meyers and Police Chief D.A. Nichols.
