25 years ago: Jan. 17, 1987

The voluntary annexation of two adjacent tracts of land bordering the northern city limits of Cape Girardeau is being considered; the city council will hold a public hearing Monday to discuss the request for annexation from property owners Billy L. and Rebecca E. Ogborn and Donald C. Dennington.

December was a busy month for airlines at the Cape Girardeau Municipal Airport; a total of 2,615 passengers passed through the turnstiles; it was a 42 percent increase over December 1985.

50 years ago: Jan. 17, 1962

Southeast Missouri Hospital is planning a 60-bed, $698,000 nursing home addition to its structure; the addition would be built on the east side of the existing building.

Water service is back to normal at office buildings along the 300 block of Broadway; hundreds of office workers were without water for about three hours yesterday afternoon, when a fire hydrant was broken by a woman motorist backing out of a parking place.

75 years ago: Jan. 17, 1937

Harry Obermann and Jim Lenand, both of Dutchtown, tell a tale of a narrow escape from the cold floodwaters near Advance, Mo.; the two were accidentally pitched from their levee-patrol motorboat yesterday; getting to the edge of a Little River Drainage District levee, they were pulled out of the water by Edwin Feuerhahn of Dutchtown, who built a fire on the windswept dike and revived the men until they were able to walk to their automobile, three miles away.

Mr. and Mrs. Allen L. Oliver of Cape Girardeau leave for St. Louis, where they will board a special train taking Gov. Lloyd Stark and his staff and party to Washington, D.C., to attend the inauguration of President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

100 years ago: Jan. 17, 1912

William H. Stubblefield Jr. of Oran, Mo., has been elected president of the board of directors of Sturdivant Bank; he succeeds L.J. Albert, who asked to be relieved of his duties a year ago.

Another of the old pioneers is called; shortly after midnight, John G. Juden dies after only a brief illness; Juden, 84, was born in Jackson on March 10, 1827; he lived in Cape Girardeau County all of his life, except for six years, when he went to California, at the time of the gold excitement in 1849; he is survived by two sons and a daughter.
