Cape Girardeau businessman Thad Bullock has filed as a Democrat seeking the 8th District congressional seat held by Republican U.S. Rep. Bill Emerson.

50 years ago: Jan. 16, 1961

Albert Schabbing, 41, is recovering from cuts and possible chest injuries he sustained Friday, when a one-ton bull turned on him; the bull struck him in the chest, throwing him several feet; he was saved by George Greenwood of Cape Girardeau, an insurance salesman who went to the Gordonville Road farm to sell Schabbing on the idea of renewing his accident insurance policy.

SEMO District Fair officers have signed the Tex Ritter Show and the County Western Show, featuring Kitty Wells, to perform at this year's fair.

75 years ago: Jan. 16, 1936

Plans and applications for the proposed Missouri National Guard armory for Cape Girardeau have been approved by the Works Progress state office in Jefferson City; the application will next go to WPA headquarters in Washington for approval.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- The state's first old-age pension checks, which will average about $9.50 a month, will probably be in the mail in 10 days or two weeks; by counties, the number of applicants to receive checks include Cape Girardeau, 32, and Butler, 16.

100 years ago: Jan. 16, 1911

The final steps in promulgating a Frisco franchise ordinance are taken in the morning, when Judge Moses Whybark delivers to acting Mayor A.C. Vasterling the formal acceptance of the franchise and the deed for the 20 acres of land that the railroad returns to the city.

In accordance with the terms of the new agreement between the city and the Frisco Railroad, the local freight trains on the Hoxie division will have their terminus here.
