A request that the Cape Girardeau School District initiate a high school soccer program was made to the board of education last night by the Cape Girardeau Youth Soccer Association; Howard Aslinger, incoming president of that organization, said it would like to see a soccer program on both the senior and junior high school levels.

Winds gusting up to 40 miles per hour downed a power line near Delta and caused some damage to a utility line near Cape Girardeau last night; a power outage was reported in the Delta area about 6:25 p.m., when high winds downed a utility line on Route EE.

50 years ago: Jan. 12, 1958

Installation services for the Rev. Francis Roschke, pastor of the new St. Andrew Lutheran Church, are conducted in the evening at Trinity Lutheran Church; following the service, a reception is held in the assembly room at Trinity School.

Arriving in Cape Girardeau this week were Lt. and Mrs. Dan Ballinger, who will become the new music directors at the Church of the Nazarene; Lt. Ballinger has been in the Air Force the past 2 1/2 years and came here from St. Paul, Minn.

75 years ago: Jan. 12, 1933

A fourth Girardean is appointed to an official post in the new Democratic administration at Jefferson City; John L. Graves, a lawyer with the Dearmont & Russell firm, will be bond attorney in the state auditor's office.

About 30 trees of various sizes have been cut from the right of way of Highway 74 between the Marquette Cement plant and the Highway 61 intersection; the trees were removed because dead branches falling on the road were a menace to traffic; the Salvation Army was given some of the wood, and people caring to may use any of the logs left along the road.

100 years ago: Jan. 12, 1908

The Rev. B.H. Whiston of Aurora, Neb., preaches at the Christian Church in Cape Girardeau; it is his first visit to this city.

Brother Felix McMullen, known to hundreds of former students of St. Vincent's College when that institution was in its prime, died last evening; he was 77 years of age; born in Ireland, McMullen took his vows in 1851 and came to Cape Girardeau in 1876.
