Thousands of birds have taken up residence at and around Southeast Missouri State University, and neighbors aren't pleased; for the past three weeks, large numbers of starlings, blackbirds and robins have been nesting in trees near the Towers complex at the university and at homes along Alta Vista, Terrace Drive, Normal and Pacific, covering the ground with their droppings.
County Bancorporation Inc., a multi-bank holding company with affiliate banks at Cape Girardeau, Jackson, Perryville, Sikeston and Columbia, Mo., has entered into an agreement to acquire Capital Bank and Trust Co. of Clayton, Mo., as a subsidiary bank.
The Rev. Oscar A. Gerken of Warren, Mich., has accepted the pastorate of Trinity Lutheran Church; Gerken, 39, will be installed at Trinity in a special service Feb. 9; he succeeds the Rev. R.C. Fessler, who transferred to First Lutheran Church in Little Rock, Ark., in October.
A federal panel's report concludes that cigarette smoking contributes to lung cancer, heart disease and other ailments; speaking for the Cape County Medical Society, its president, Dr. William O.L. Seabaugh, says the society in general agrees with the findings of the committee.
The Teachers College Board of Regents approved the purchase by the college of art window panels for the new library building, these to cost $2,250; they are being designed by the Bonawit Co. of New York City.
A tentative contract to establish a shirt factory in Cape Girardeau was signed by officials of the chamber of commerce and Barney Schucart of New York; the contract provides for the establishment here of the Girardeau Shirt Co., which will manufacture men's dress shirts; Schucart has a tentative contract with Louis Hecht for the purchase of his four-story brick building on Main Street, now occupied by S. & L. Credit Stores.
Dr. C.H. Green is the guest preacher at the evening service at St. James A.M.E. Church; pastor of the church is the Rev. J.A. Chandley.
Max Willett, son of the Rev. J.O. Willett, a former minister of this city, and who now lives in Poplar Bluff, Mo., is a Cape Girardeau visitor.
