City officials are on track to meet city's May 1 goal to convert operation of city's water system from Union Electric to city; Union Electric and Mid-Missouri Engineering Inc., engineering firm contracted to operate water system for city, have met several times to "iron out" various matters tied to transaction; local voters approved city's purchase of system in November.

Cape Girardeau area continues to dig out from under 10 inches of snow that fell yesterday; storm began shortly after midnight Saturday and continued without letup until early Sunday night; frigid temperatures continue, with mercury sinking overnight to minus 3.

50 years ago: Jan. 10, 1952

Scores of Missouri's public school music teachers swarm into Cape Girardeau for two days of clinics and conferences sponsored by their state association; Association President George C. Wilson of Columbia predicts meet will draw more teachers than previous gatherings held in Columbia.

Unlighted for many years, Courthouse Park is finally getting system of floodlights that is expected to illuminate many of park's dark corners and allow pedestrian use of its walks after dark.

75 years ago: Jan. 10, 1927

Frank B. Newton, engineer for Missouri Highway Department in Division No. 10 since inauguration of Missouri's road-building program, has tendered his resignation to highway commission and will leave service of department March 1; Newton has accepted another position in West, exact nature of which he doesn't care to reveal at present.

Marston - With only meager clues available, authorities are trying to connect robbery of Bank of Marston early Saturday, in which $3,300 in currency was taken, with similar robbery several weeks ago of Morehouse Trust Co. at Morehouse.
