The Army Corps of Engineers has given a favorable recommendation for implementation of the proposed Cape LaCroix Creek flood control project; approval of the plan clears the way for completion of the project, pending financial arrangements.

A decision by Southeast Missouri State University's director of news services, Wayne Norton, to return to the classroom this fall has led to a restructuring of the University Relations Department; named to take Norton's place is Ron Hines.

50 years ago: March 25, 1959

The cold of winter has taken a toll at the Rose Test Garden in Capaha Park, but nearly all the plants are expected to grow out from ground level; most of the roses will have to be pruned back to the ground, says Mrs. C.E. Stiver.

Tomorrow will be the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Cape Girardeau Police Department; it was created March 26, 1859, by city ordinance; before then, a town marshal was one of the elected city councilmen and had the complete responsibility for protecting the lives and property here.

A class of 43 young people is confirmed at services in the morning at Trinity Lutheran Church, with the Rev. F.H. Melzer, pastor, in charge.

Four ministers are cooperating in a revival at the Assembly of God Church; the Rev. T.B. Chronister of Chaffee, Mo., the Rev. David Hogan of Fornfelt and the Rev. John Mayfield of St. Louis are taking turns preaching at the services; they are being assisted in the devotional meetings by the pastor, the Rev. P.T. Huffman.

100 years ago: March 25, 1909

An out-of-town veneer company is asking the Cape Girardeau Commercial Club for help finding a good location for a factory; the owners are not asking for any bonus or financial aid; company representatives have been here and are interested in obtaining part of the smelter property.

The new Caldwell Underselling Store begins its first spring opening in the morning; the crowds who visit the business are profuse in their compliments, and the success of the new concern is assured.
