Gerecke retired from the U.S. Army as a colonel in 1974, retired as chief of police from Cape Girardeau Police Department in 1981, and retired as an instructor at Southeast Missouri State University in 1992. Mrs. Gerecke was a nurse in the Army.

The Gereckes children and spouses are David and wife Dorothy of Australia; Stephen and wife Karen of Lansing, Kan., and Jan and husband Robert of McClure, Ill. They have three grandchildren and a great-grandson.
