Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Gateley of Cape Girardeau celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception June 9, 2001, at Lynwood Baptist Church.
About 200 guests attended the event, hosted by their children.
Gateley and Ella Louise Sanders were married June 7, 1951, at Red Star Baptist Church, by the Rev. S.S. Borum. Their attendants were Louise Propst; Ruth Hency, sister of the groom; Dorothy Sanders, sister-in-law of the bride; Edward Propst; Harold Sanders, brother of the bride; and Guthrie Gateley, brother of the groom.
The Gateleys have two children, Stephen Gateley of Mt. Juliet, Tenn., and Renauta Gateley McNabb of Cape Girardeau. They have three grandchildren.
Gateley was in public education 40 years, 30 of which were in Cape Girardeau Public Schools. Mrs. Gateley was receptionist/secretary 18 years at First Baptist Church.
