Big Crowd as New Drive-In Opens
A near capacity crowd attended the opening of Cape Girardeau's new Star Vue Drive-In Theater Wednesday night to see a new motion picture, "Jubilee Trail," on the giant new screen that gave it the illusion of depth near that of 3D pictures.
A number of motion picture men from St. Louis, interested in seeing the new theater, its screen and projection, were in the audience. They were enthusiastic over the new outdoor movie.
Howard Batess, one of the owners, said more than 800 cars were moved out of the new theater onto Highway 61 in 17 minutes after the first showing.

Southeast university purchases seminary

Southeast Missouri State University plans to renovate St. Vincent's College and Seminary in Cape Girardeau and turn it into a school of visual and performing arts.
The historic site overlooks the Mississippi River south of the Mississippi River bridge and just to the north of the Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge under construction.
The university is buying the property with a financial gift from local business owner and longtime university supporter B.W. Harrison of Cape Girardeau.
The purchase price wasn't disclosed. The Catholic group that sold the property, the Congregation of the Mission, required the price to be kept secret as a condition of the sale.
Southeast wants to move its departments of art, dance, music and theater to the seminary property. The University Museum would also move there. The site would be known as the university's River Campus...
$50 million plant to be built here

A newly formed company, Kyowa Food Inc., will build a $50 million plant in the Nash Road industrial area and initially employ 50 people, it was announced Wednesday.
The company, which will produce food seasonings, is owned by Kyowa Hakko Kogyo Co. Ltd. The plant will be built near its sister company, Biokyowa Inc., which produces food supplements for the swine and poultry markets.
Announcement of the new plant was made at the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce office by officials of Kyowa Foods and Biokyowa.
Plant c onstruction is to start this summer with completion anticipted in summer 2000. The plant will be about 32,000 square feet, including processing space and warehouses.
