SUBMARINE FLOTILLA HERE

Submarine Chaser 2, the vanguard of the naval fleet, steamed into Cape Girardeau at 3:30 this afternoon and moored to a barge at the foot of Themis Street.

The submarine K-5, the destroyer Isabel and two more submarine chasers arrived a few hours later.

The submarine, which was captured from the Germans at the start of the war, will give several diving demonstrations during its visit to Cape Girardeau.

Thousands of people crowded the riverfront to view the ships and hundreds toured the vessels.

The fleet is accompanied by a naval band and a glee club. These organizations will give concerts during the day...

Football legend O.J. Simpson on suicide watch at LA jail

LOS ANGELES -- A tearful O.J. Simpson was locked alone Saturday in a 7-by-9-foot cell, his emotions in tatters after his surreal flight from charges that he murdered his ex-wife and a friend of hers.

Simpson was in a high-security section of the sheriff's Men's Central Jail without bail. A deputy was posted around the clock outside the cell on a suicide watch.

Simpson's arraignment is scheduled to be held in the morning. He is accused of fatally stabbing Nicole Brown Simpson and waiter Ronald Goldman on June 12.

Simpson slipped away from a friend's house Friday just before his arrest. Five hours later he led police on a 60-mile chase that ended on the cobblestone driveway of his $1.2 million Brentwood mansion...

Emerson dies of lung cancer

U.S. Rep. Bill Emerson died of lung cancer Saturday at 6:17 p.m. at Bethesda Naval Hospital in Bethesda, Md. He was 58.

The announcement of his death came in a brief statement issued from his Washington office late Saturday.

Emerson, a Cape Girardeau Republican who represented Missouri's 8th Congressional District, was diagnosed with lung cancer in October 1995. Undergoing a combination of radiation and chemotherapy treatments for the unoperable disease, he had continued to carry out his congressional duties.

Emerson's wife and family were with him when he died, said Emerson's chief of staff Lloyd Smith.

Survivors include his wife, Jo Ann; their two daughters, Victoria and Katherine; and two daughters from a previous marriage, Elizabeth and Abigail...
