Anti-Horse Thief Organization Dropped After 43 Years

Jackson, Feb. 11 -- Because members felt the usefulness of the organization was past, the Cape County Anti-Horse Thief Association was disbanded at a meeting this afternoon at the Courthouse. The organization was formed Aug. 2, 1890. There are about 185 members scattered all over the country. Thirty members were present at today's meeting.

The retiring officers are: president G.W. Siemers, vice president Duree Jones, treasurer Henry Puls, and secretary John G. Putz. In the absence of the president and vice president, Mr. Puls presided at today's meeting. A treasury balance of about $550 is to be distributed among the membership.

FIRE DESTROYS PARK CLUBHOUSE

Fire of undetermined origin destroyed the large frame Community Clubhouse Building in Fairground Park shortly before noon today. Nine patients in an emergency hospital set up for refugees with communicable diseases were carried to safety.

Within 10 minutes the building had burned to the ground.

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Martin, living on the second floor with a nephew, escaped a few minutes before their escape was shut off. Martin is the park keeper.

Two nurses and a cook, in a few minutes of heroic work, carried the sick people...

2 officers shot; suspect dead

A shootout inside a Cape Girardeau motel Saturday ended with a suspected drug manufacturer killed and two police officers wounded and in serious condition.

Officer Bradley Moore was shot in the left arm and officer Keith May in the abdomen after the two followed up on a tip from the SEMO Drug Task Force that methamphetamine was being produced in a room at the Super 8 Motel on Kingshighway.

The two were in serious condition at Southeast Missouri Hospital late Saturday...
