In 1989 Dan and his wife Dianna started in a rented 5000-square-foot building with five employees including themselves. Celebrating 21 years in business this May, SFI has established a reputation that is as strong as the steel in the products it sells.

"We've never had an outside salesperson," said Dan Todt. "Our business has grown on its own reputation."

SFI not only has a solid reputation with its customers, but also its employees. Eleven of the 18 employees have been there five years or longer, with five being there from the start. SFI pays 100% of the employees medical insurance and contributes to their Simple Employee Retirement Plan.

The company specializes in custom steel fabrication, making products to customer specifications. The company often gets calls to make products that are not the run-of-the-mill metal working jobs. "We've built items from drawings on a scrap piece of paper and cardboard patterns," Dan Todt joked. "We've fabricated and shipped items all over the U.S."

SFI has qualified welders for welding stainless, aluminum, mild steel, cast iron and cast aluminum. The company's larger customers are in industries such as mining, farming, foundries, wood, chemicals and food service.

SFI also sells various types of steel, aluminum, stainless steel and galvanized steel in the form of flat bars, angles, beams, rods, pipes, sheet metal and grating.
