COLUMBIA, S.C. -- A small earthquake struck off the coast of Charleston on Monday but caused no damage, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake was recorded at 6:39 p.m. and had a preliminary magnitude of 4.2, according to information on the National Earthquake Information Center Web site.

The National Weather Service in Charleston said the quake was centered about 16 miles south-southeast of Seabrook Island and was felt as far north as the North Carolina border and as far south as Savannah, Ga.

At least one television station in Columbia received calls from viewers in the Midlands who said they felt the quake. Columbia is about 100 miles northwest of Charleston.

It was the second quake in the area in the past week. On Nov. 8, an earthquake with a magnitude of 3.5 was recorded 155 miles south-southeast of Charleston.
