As the owner of Design Exclusive in Cape Girardeau, Linda McKinnis has learned a thing or two about making a statement with home design and decor.

The front door is one of the first things people notice about your house, so you might as well make a good first impression, she says. It's also an easy, inexpensive way to give your home a new look.

We chatted with Linda about how to do just that.

Flourish: First, let's talk about the importance of sprucing up the front door. Why is it worth changing the look now and then? How can the door make a difference in the overall look of our home?

McKinnis: A front door makes the first impression, plus can add curb appeal and a warm welcome to your home. Choose a front door color that complements and coordinates with your house. If you are unsure of a color selection, ask someone with experience or an eye for color. A nice contrast will make a door 'pop!' Your door color can be an expression of your personality.

I frequently change my door appearance with seasonal door wreaths and baskets. Topiaries, nice potted plants and flowers always make a fantastic addition. Pay attention to your exterior lighting, hardware and doormats as well. Remember everything works together for the perfect look.

My latest and favorite color combination is a classic black door with white trim. Pinterest is a new and great way to find the latest trends. Let others inspire you to use your imagination.

Most importantly, don't be afraid to make a change. Don't settle for a boring front door.

Flourish: What are some more ways to decorate the door and make it stand out, from wreaths to designs to colors? What seems to work well, in your experience?

McKinnis: A gorgeous front door color always makes me take a second glance, but a beautiful wreath or door decoration literally can take my breath away.

My tips for creating an inviting and perfect front door:

* First, make sure your door is not out of season.

* Don't be afraid to make a change.

* Use only quality ribbons and proper hanging methods for wreaths, baskets and door decorations.

* I love using flat-back baskets filled with beautiful seasonal flowers and accented with lovely ribbon tied with a loose bow or square knot.

* One of my favorite front door decorations is an oversized initial or a monogram grouping. Choose your favorite colors to customize a stunning way to accent and personalize your door.

* Burlap is one of the latest trends and can be a fun addition.

* A spotlight on the front door always looks great at night.

* Don't forget the back door!

Flourish: What are your your tips for pulling together a look and doing it well?

McKinnis: Make sure the size of the wreath or door arrangement is in the correct proportion to your door. Secondly, pay attention that it's not hanging too high or low. There are fantastic magnet hooks and suction cups available at local stores that make hanging easy.

If ribbon is being used, be sure it is not sun faded or weathered. Changing the bow or ribbon is an easy way to keep the arrangement looking neat and well kept.

Less is always more. An uncluttered statement is much more appealing to the eye.
