While the state of most Chaffee sports has gone downhill in the past 20 years, there was always one sport in which Chaffee seemed to excel.
Baseball in Chaffee has been a source of pride for the town for years, and much of that pride started with a successful run starting in the mid-1970s. From 1975 to 1992, the Red Devils captured nine district championships and made it to the state final four four times.
In 1975, Chaffee turned the program's second district title into the school's first state championship, defeating St. Francis Borgia 7-2 in the Class A title game. Chaffee finished the 1975 season 18-5 under coach Mike Payne.
A district title followed for the Red Devils in 1976, and in 1977 it was another trip to the state final four for Chaffee. The Red Devils dominated Class A once again, winning 8-1 against Dixon in the championship game.
The program fell below those standards for a few years before picking up another championship in 1983. Coached by Rick Chastain, the 1983 Red Devils recorded a 16-5 mark and won the Class 1A state title 6-2 over Englewood Christian. The baseball title in 1983 was followed by Chaffee's only other state title, a Class 1A football championship the following fall.
The rebirth of Chaffee baseball in 1983 led to five district championships the next six years.
