Maj. Brian Tully defined the unit as a combat heavy unit responsible vertical and horizontal construction during peacetime and wartime operations. The unit handles planning, paperwork and organizing of the battalions, which perform the construction or demolition of bridges, camps and hospitals.

During peacetime operations, the unit commands the 110th Engineer Battalion and the 1140th Engineer Battalion, which primarily respond to state emergencies.

The unit's wartime command reverts to the 201st Engineer Battalion and the 135th Engineer Company, which provide engineer support the active soldiers.

Homeland security has steadily become the National Guard's central agenda following the events of Sept. 11, 2001. About 20 individuals from the unit currently are on active duty in Bosnia, the Middle East and Fort Sill and Fort Leonard Wood.
