2013 Golden Globe Awards best and worst fashion

The Golden Globe Awards kicked off Hollywood's major red carpet season, with the Grammys, Screen Actors Guild and Oscars still to come. The two major color trends on the Globes carpet were polar opposites: Fire engine red and soft blush. Here, some of the night's best and worst looks.

Anne Hathaway looked beautiful, but then again, she always does. She complimented her simple white two-piece with simple accessories. Of course, she walked out the the best accessory of all: An award for her performance in "Les Miserables."

Amanda Seyfried was one of the many actress wearing a soft, romantic blush-colored gown. And while her dress on it's own is one of my favorites, I don't think the color does her complexions any favors. She looks ethereal, yes, but also like she hasn't seen the sun since she filmed "Mamma Mia!".

Tina Fey, left, and Amy Poehler walked the red carpet in other ensembles, but the gowns they wore to open the show were better. Fey's body has never looked better, her hair and makeup are flawless and the dress is fine. I'm not a fan of Poehler's low side bun, but that's my only complaint. And, really, I love both of them too much to criticize too harshly.

Lucy Liu wore a sofa cover to the Golden Globes. That's all I have to say. Oh, and obviously, worst dressed.

I love Jennifer Lawrence. She's refreshingly down to earth in all of her interviews, a great actress and usually guaranteed to be a knockout on the red carpet. And, from the front, she was on Sunday night. I loved the gold belt, the hair the accessories. And then, she turned to the side, revealing breast cones reminiscent (on a much smaller scale) of Madonna's Blond Ambition Tour. Sigh...so close to perfection.

Kerry Washington does the see-through skirt trend right. Normally, I'm not a fan of ankle-length dresses, but it works here. My only quibble: I'm not sure about the hair. I love the bangs, but wonder if a softer look would have worked better with the dress.

Rachel Weisz does the see-through skirt trend wrong. There's nothing interesting about the dress, and the polka dots on the skirt create a weird pattern on her legs.

I just don't know what to say about Lena Dunham. She's embraced her body, and that's great, but surely a stylist could help her find a dress that highlighted her assets better than this. The color is gorgeous with her skin, eyes and hair, but she looked downright uncomfortable in the ill-fitting gown both times she took the stage to accept awards.

Hayden Panettiere in another blush mermaid gown. She keeps it youthful though with an electric pink clutch.

Michelle Dockery looks classic and elegrant in this gold-and-white gown. Soft hair and simple accessories complete the look. Lady Mary Crawley would be proud.

Sienna Miller takes the 3-D craze too far with this floral gown. And the neon pink flowers aren't helping. Runner-up worst dressed.

Jessica Alba was stunning in this figure-hugging melon gown. The color is fantastic with her golden skin and the feathered clutch is a fun touch.

We get it Jennifer Lopez: You've got a banging body. But, at this point, Beyonce does this look better. This white lace and nude fabric combo looks like it could be worn in a figure skating competition, so it probably shouldn't be worn on the red carpet.

Claire Danes is a knockout in a red dress. It shows off her curves in all the right ways, and she looks comfortable and at-ease in it. Ready to hate her? She gave birth less than a month ago.

I can't decide how I feel about Nicole Kidman's gown. I think it looks good on her, and her hair and makeup look great. (I'm glad her face shows some signs of life again.) But, ultimately, I feel there's just too much going on with the gold details on the neckline and the mesh-ribbing midsection. She's got great arm candy in hubby Keith Urban, though.

Kristen Wiig never looked this good on the red carpet last year when she was a nominee. This black dress is simple and sexy and fits her like a glove. Her hair looks great and I love the gold clutch and small earrings. Just the right touches.

Taylor Swift looks so serious in this dark purple mermaid gown. It fits her great, but with her heavy eye makeup, I feel like she's a little girl playing dress-up.

Lea Michele rarely misses on the red carpet. And her white sparkly dress, complete with sexy slit, and green and diamond accessories don't let her down. But when she was on stage as a presenter, her skin tone was veering close to Oompa Loompa territory. Turn down the spray tan dial a bit next time, Lea.

Amy Adams had the best of the blush gowns, in my opinion. Wispy, ethereal and romantic, it suits her coloring and body beautifully. She continued the romantic look with an updo and finger curls, but all I wanted to do was push her hair off her face. Still a knockout.

Jennifer Garner was one of many ladies in red at the Golden Globes. And of that bunch, her dress is one of the best. The sparkly, dark red gown flatters her skin and hair. The simple updo and gold help tone down the red just enough.

Halle Berry was one of many stars showing off a lot of leg with a thigh-high slit. (A trend we can thank Angelina Jolie for, I suppose.) But other than showing off her gorgeous gams, this Versace really does Halle no favors. In particular, the blousing on the bodice gives the appearance that one of her breasts is much larger than the other.

Jodie Foster's dress doesn't do much for me. But she's one of those celebrities you have to grade on their own special curve. And for her, Foster -- who was honored at the Globes with the Cecil B. DeMille lifetime achievement award -- looks pretty good.

Julianne Moore's custom Tom Ford dress is striking from the front and the gold bracelets add just the right touch. But when she turned around, the white left her backside looking unbalanced.

To quote a friend, Kate Hudson is looking "just right." This black and gold gown shows off Hudson's curves (and her, ahem, golden globes), and her hair and makeup look fabulous. Hudson doesn't always pull off a more sophisticated look, but she nailed it this time.

Naomi Watts channeled Old Hollywood glamor from her simple gown (if you think it's too demure, you didn't see the cutout back) to her elegant updo.

A see-through skirt and a lot of leg: Eva Longoria beautifully pulled off two trends at once. With minimal makeup and an unfussy updo, she let the dress (and her body) do the work.
