Travelers from the Cape Girardeau area who want to get to St. Louis or Memphis can now wait out of the elements for Greyhound buses in an around-the-clock waiting room, thanks to the Cape Girardeau County Transit Authority's new agreement with the bus line. Tickets are available at the transit authority office from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

For several years, Greyhound buses have not stopped in Cape Girardeau, instead picking up passengers at park in Jackson. Now Greyhound buses will come through the city four times a day (10:55 a.m. and 10:20 p.m. to St. Louis, 2:55 p.m. and 8:55 p.m. to Memphis).

The waiting room is being provided by the transit authority at its offices at 937 Broadway. The building's main entrance faces Broadway, but the easiest access to the waiting room is through the lower-level entrance at the rear of the building facing Themis Street. Greyhound plans to put up signs that will make the new waiting room easier to find.

Generally, ridership on public transportation -- trains, light rail, buses -- is up across the nation this year, thanks in part to efforts to save on fuel.

Area riders who welcome back the Greyhound service to Cape Girardeau can thank the county's transit authority for working out the details. As the Greyhound slogan says: "We're on our way."
