Welcome, Rotarians, to the City of Roses

When members of Rotary clubs from the eastern half of Missouri arrive in Cape Girardeau today for their annual district conference, they will be coming together for the very reason Rotary International founder Paul Harris first met with some business acquaintances in Chicago back in 1905: an opportunity for socializing with like-minded folks who are active in their community.

But the district conference today and Saturday will also give Rotarians an occasion for reflecting on the goodwill and international understanding that are fostered by Rotary clubs around the world.

In particular, special attention will be given to Rotary International's multimillion-dollar fund-raising efforts for a worldwide project to eradicate polio and to Rotary's programs for international student and cultural exchanges.

The conference's host is Jerry McClanahan of Cape Girardeau, who is serving as this year's governor of District 6060. McClanahan's enthusiasm for the ideals of Rotary have been exhibited as he has visited various clubs throughout the district, including the three Rotary clubs in Cape Girardeau and the one in Jackson.
