Missouri's Republican-led House and Senate decided to subsidize global giant Ford Motor Co. with tax incentives to allegedly keep Ford jobs in Missouri; most other Missouri businesses lack this advantage. Chuck Purgason, a state senator, filibustered the efforts of his own party.

U.S. Senate candidate Purgason demonstrated the nerve required to stop government from choosing winners and losers in private enterprise.

We should question Senator Purgason on other issues when he comes to Cape Girardeau to express his views.

The question independents and Republicans will have to ask themselves on Aug. 3 is: do we put forward people who follow the Republican platform, or do we allow people who simply pay it lip service to lead the party?
