We didn't mean to jinx the cool weather

Perhaps we spoke too soon.

Last week, we ran a story announcing that, for the first time in at least 30 years, Cape Girardeau residents had not seen a high temperature reach 90 degrees over the first 12 days of August.

That was true enough. The average high temperature in the first 12 days of August was 85 degrees, the second-coolest in the last 10 years.

The average low for that same time period was 65, the third-lowest in the last 10 years.

But then on Friday, we reached 92 and over the weekend, the temperatures reached a balmy 96 on both Saturday and Sunday. Wow. We went from pleasant to unbearable in a matter of days.

We're not suggesting our story jinxed the weather. We know only weather forecasters can do that. We also were grateful for the cool start to the month.

But next year, if we're getting cooler temperatures during the dog days of summer, someone politely remind us to keep our big mouths shut.
