To the editor:
Last October, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3838 Ladies Auxiliary in Cape Girardeau was handed the duty of organizing the Veterans Day parade. Unfortunately, we did not have good participation from the community or schools in the area. The parade consisted mostly of veterans and their families. Many of the few spectators were also veterans or their family members.
The VFW auxiliary will not be organizing this event this year. We are please to turn the activities over to the city of Cape Girardeau to plan a Veterans Day tribute.
Many of the schools and organization that were contacted to participate stated notice of the parade was too short. This is the reason we are notifying community leaders, schools and other organizations well in advance. Veterans Day is Nov. 11 every year. It is a federal holiday and should be given the respect it deserves to honor those who have served and continue to serve our great nation.
DEBORAH GRIFFIN, President, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3838 Ladies Auxiliary, Cape Girardeau
