To the editor:
My son, Jeremy Hammack, lives in Cape Girardeau. He is being charged with writing stolen checks, which he tells me he didn't do. He's also looking at seven years in prison for this charge. I'm not saying he's innocent, and I'm not saying he's guilty since I don't live near him. What bothers me is I happen to know drug dealers in your town who aren't being charged with bringing drugs into your area. I also happen to know your town has a huge drug problem. I've heard about the teacher who was charged with child molestation and who was given probation. What I'm getting at is why on earth would a judge sentence my son to seven years in prison when your town has criminals who do a lot worse? My son is in God's hands. He knows what is best for my son. I don't think there ever has been nor will there ever be fairness.
