As we continue to feel the effects of rising gas prices, it's important to take a look at what can be done to counter the expense.
If you are in the market for a new vehicle, consider a vehicle that gets 30 mpg. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, it can reduce your yearly gas bill by $968.
However, not everyone is in the position to buy a new car. Here are some fuel-saving tips to remember as Memorial Day approaches:
Slow down and use cruise control whenever possible. The EPA estimates an improvement by 10 to 15 percent when driving 55 miles per hour instead of 65. Using cruise control helps maintain speed and conserve fuel.
By keeping your tires properly inflated to the recommended tire pressure, you can reduce fuel usage by up to 4 percent.
Try to avoid overpacking. Easier said then done, but too much weight on the roof rack or in the trunk makes the engine work harder by reducing the car's aerodynamics, losing as much as 5 percent in fuel economy.
Leaving your windows rolled down at speeds higher than 50 mph can also increase the drag on your vehicle and reduce your miles per gallon. Wait until slower in-town speeds before you turn off the AC and let in fresh air.
