The current national news has been so heavy lately, what with the 9-11 hearings and the continued terrorist activities around the world (with major emphasis on capturing hostages, and the terrorists' renewed threats to kill most anyone in Iraq), that this column is devoted to information and some humor. We all need a break.
If you're not familiar with the work of Steven Wright, he's the quirky comedian who once said: "I woke up one morning and all of my stuff had been stolen -- and replaced by exact duplicates."

Smoking: What harm can it do? More than a billion people worldwide smoke cigarettes, and at least half of them will die prematurely as a result. Half of those deaths will occur in middle age, with an average loss of 20 to 25 years of life expectancy.
Based on data collected from 1995 to 1999, the Centers for Disease Control estimated that adult male smokers lost an average of 13.2 years of life and female smokers lost 14.5 years of life because of smoking.
The primary damage caused by smoking involves the heart and lungs. Cigarette smoking accounts for at least 30 percent of all cancer deaths. It is a major cause of cancers of the lung, larynx (voice box), oral cavity, pharynx (throat), and esophagus and is a contributing cause in the development of cancers of the bladder, pancreas, liver, uterine cervix, kidney, stomach, colon and rectum and some leukemias. -- Personal Best newsletter
