To the editor:On March 11 conservatives felt a breath of fresh air. At age 77 and a longtime conservative working hard for the Republican Party since the Goldwater presidential campaign and with energy being wasted on many disappointing candidates, I felt a flicker of hope.

Former senator Fred Thompson's appearance on TV with Chris Wallace ignited a spark of enthusiasm in millions of disillusioned conservatives. There is not one candidate who appeals to the majority of conservatives. They are all seriously flawed.

If we can present a true conservative to the electorate, regardless of party affiliation, he will win by a comfortable margin. I talk with many from both parties, and they are dissatisfied with all candidates who have so far declared.

For many years it has been my heartfelt belief that the majority of citizens have been waiting for someone with the core values of our Founding Fathers, and Thompson sounds like that candidate.

I know Thompson thinks time is not a factor, but I encourage him to decide soon, and I hope he throws his hat into the ring and becomes our candidate.

Something to think about: "The heart and soul of a nation changes because of the kind of leaders we choose to admire and vote for."
